Las Mareas Community Leader and Director of the Educational Point program

Located on the shores of the Caribbean Sea in the southern coast of Puerto Rico.

The coastal community of Las Mareas was formed in the ancient footprints of indigenous settlements:

Its first inhabitants were fishing and salt workers families who settled next to the historic salt mine Salina de Monserrate.

The life of these families depended on:

Harvest of salt

Sugar cane

Livestock farming

Sea and mountain fishing

Today, approximately 300 people live in Las Mareas community

Las Mareas’s community leaders have faced many challenges with hope and determination, highlighting among them:

Food insecurity

Illiteracy

Drug dealing and consumption

Social and economic inequality

The Educational Point serves as a working space where young leaders of the community continue to flourish and benefit from their collaborative efforts; young leaders who are committed to the community’s well-being and growth, leading by example their ability to face, work through and overcome adversity.

Recreational and Social Center/Point

After overcoming tremendous challenges and with the support of Bravo Family Foundation, the Educational, Recreational and Social Center/Point @ Las Mareas achieved formal status as a nonprofit and today continues to strengthen its organizational capacity to promote the community’s cultural, economic and social well-being.
